U.S. Route 301 (US 301) is a 170-mile-long (270 km) U.S. Highway in the U.S. state of Georgia.It travels south-to-north from the St. Marys River south-southeast of Folkston to the Savannah River north-northeast of Sylvania, via Folkston, Jesup, Ludowici, Glennville, Claxton, Statesboro, and Sylvania.
US 301 was realigned to turn east on U.S. Route 92/SR 600 in northern Tampa and south on SR 43; SR 43 was later extended north to meet SR 41 at Thonotosassa. This was done at the same time as US 541 was eliminated and US 41 was moved onto the former US 541 south of Tampa; US 301 ran along what had been US 41.
In 1967, the Seaboard Air Line merged with their long-time rival, the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (ACL). The ACL also had a main line running from Richmond, Virginia to Tampa, Florida that was roughly parallel to the SAL’s main line. [8] The two main lines crossed each other in Chester, Savannah, Jacksonville, and Plant City.
US 301 first entered Florida in 1949, terminating in Tampa. It was rerouted along the 'old US 41' route to Palmetto in 1952, bypassing Tampa, and extended in 1953 south to Sarasota. In Sarasota, US 301 initially terminated at Main Street, which carried US 41 from Washington Boulevard to downtown Sarasota at the time. [11]
