X-chairs have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs, often featuring carvings in the shape of animals or animal-skin draperies. Roman X-chairs are believed to have been used by magistrates and nobles. [1] A type of folding chair with a frame like an X viewed from the front or the side originated in medieval Italy.
A folding chair of ebony and ivory with gold fittings was found in Tutankhamun's tomb in Egypt. Folding chairs were already used in the Nordic Bronze Age, Ancient Egypt, Minoan Greece and Ancient Rome. The frame was mostly made of wood, and seldom made of metal. The wood was inlaid with artistic carvings, gilded, and decorated with ivory.

The earliest Egyptian tables were carved from stone and made with very low projections to keep the table surface off the ground. Later, in the Old Kingdom, tables would develop longer legs and be braced with a stretcher between them.
Chairsare known to have existed since Ancient Egyptand have been widespread in the Western world from the Greeksand Romansonwards. They were in common use in Chinafrom the twelfth century, and were used by the Aztecs. Surviving examples of chairs from medieval Europe are often ornate works associated with royalty and nobility.
The most unusual example was a folding stool with a leather seat and legs ending in duck heads inlaid with ivory. [128] A further wooden stool with a central cut-out was found in the antechamber; it is thought to be a toilet seat or commode, the only example of its type known from ancient Egypt. [129]
Curule seat. A curule seat probably designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, made in carved wood and gilded ca. 1810 in Berlin, later restored and reupholstered by a private dealer. A curule seat is a design of a (usually) foldable and transportable chair noted for its uses in Ancient Rome and Europe through to the 20th century.
The chair is notably the oldest (excluding royal chairs) surviving chair of its style from Egypt. [1] The seat of the chair is a reproduction made from woven reeds, as the original seat has long since decayed. An image of Reniseneb seated in a similar chair is carved into the backrest of the chair, and its feet take the form of carved lion claws.
