Portrait of Alexandra of Denmark is an 1864 portrait painting by the German artist Franz Xaver Winterhalter. [1] [2] [3] It depicts Alexandra of Denmark, then Princess of Wales as the wife of the future Edward VII. Alexandra had arrived in Britain from her native Denmark the previous year for her wedding.

Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie was born on 24 December 1837 in the Herzog-Max-Palais in Munich, Bavaria.She was the third child and second daughter of Duke Maximilian Joseph in Bavaria and Princess Ludovika of Bavaria, the half-sister of King Ludwig I of Bavaria.
Winterhalter not only painted the official portraits of the British royal house but also dedicated himself to producing private images, as is the case with this work that was commissioned as a surprise gift from Queen Victoria to her husband Prince Albert on the occasion of his twenty-fourth birthday. Albert well appreciated the portrait.
The Empress Elisabeth of Austria ("Sisi") visited England, arriving on 2 August 1874, where she met the Earl Spencer and his equerry Middleton. When she returned to England in 1876, she visited Lord Spencer at Althorp, and Bay Middleton was asked to "pilot" the Empress. She left England in February 1882 and never hunted in England or Ireland again.
