A Mason jar, also known as a canning jar, preserves jar or fruit jar, is a glass jar used in home canning to preserve food. It was named after American tinsmith John Landis Mason, who patented it in 1858. The jar's mouth has a screw thread on its outer perimeter to accept a metal ring or "band".
The Kilner Jar was originally invented by John Kilner (1792–1857) and associates, [4] and made by a firm of glass bottlemakers from Yorkshire called Kilner which he set up. [5] The original Kilner bottlemakers operated from 1842, when the company was first founded, until 1937, when the company went into liquidation.
Jars are commonly in either pint or quart capacities, with two opening diameters, known as "standard" and "wide mouth". When a jar has cooled and is properly sealed, pressing the dimple on the lid will not make any sound. A jar is a rigid, cylindrical or slightly conical container, typically made of glass, ceramic, or plastic, with a wide mouth or opening that can be closed with a lid, screw cap, lug cap, cork stopper, roll-on cap, crimp-on cap, press-on cap, plastic shrink, heat sealed lidding film, an inner seal, a tamper-evident band, or other suitable means.
The glass jars come in a variety of shapes and sizes, have rubber seals, glass lids, and stainless steel clips. Food is processed in Weck jars using the water bath canning technique, not a pressure canner. During the canning process the lids are secured by the clips which must be removed once the processing is complete and the jars have cooled.
