The Third of May 1808 in Madrid (also known as El tres de mayo de 1808 en Madrid or Los fusilamientos de la montaña del Príncipe Pío, [2] or Los fusilamientos del tres de mayo. Commonly known as The Third of May 1808 .) [ 1 ] is a painting completed in 1814 by the Spanish painter Francisco Goya , now in the Museo del Prado , Madrid.

The Dos de Mayo or Second of May Uprising took place in Madrid, Spain, on 2–3 May 1808. The rebellion, mainly by civilians, with some isolated military action [ 4 ] by junior officers , was against the occupation of the city by French troops, and was violently repressed by the French Imperial forces , [ 5 ] with hundreds of public executions.

Although the images in the group were based on the experience of Madrid, none of the scenes depict specific events, and there are no identifiable buildings to place the scenes. Goya's focus is on the darkened masses of dead and barely alive bodies, men carrying corpses of women, and bereaved children mourning for lost parents. [ 33 ]

Although the two versions of the Maja are the same size, the sitter in the clothed version occupies a slightly larger proportion of the pictorial space; according to art historian Janis Tomlinson she seems almost to "press boldly against the confines of her frame", making her more brazen in comparison to the comparatively "timid" nude portrait.

In October 1908, the bronze statue, cast in Madrid by "La Metaloplástica. Campins y Codina" foundry, was put on the pedestal. [6] The cylindrical stone pedestal features an inscription reading "al pueblo / del / dos de mayo / de / 1808" ("to the People of the 2 May 1808"), surmounted by a bronze rendition of the municipal coat of arms.
