Sandusky County is a county located in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Ohio. As of the 2020 census, the population was 58,896. [2] Its county seat and largest city is Fremont. [3] The county was formed on February 12, 1820, from portions of Huron County. The name is derived from the Wyandot word meaning "water" (Wyandot: saandustee). [4]
The courts of common pleas are the trial courts of general jurisdiction in the state. They are the only trial courts created by the Ohio Constitution (in Article IV, Section 1). The duties of the courts are outlined in Article IV, Section 4. Each of Ohio's 88 counties has a court of common pleas.
There are three levels of the Ohio state judiciary. The lowest level is the courts of common pleas, the intermediate-level courts are the district courts of appeals, and the highest-ranking court is the Ohio Supreme Court.
The courthouse remains in use by the Sandusky County courts, [2] as well as by local government archives. Among the records housed at the Sandusky County Courthouse is a petition filed in 1849 by local attorney Rutherford B. Hayes to change the city's name to Fremont from "Lower Sandusky", a name that was seen as too generic for the convenience of its residents.
