José María Juan Nepomuceno Crisóforo Iglesias Inzáurraga (5 January 1823 – 17 December 1891) [1] was a Mexican lawyer, professor, journalist and liberal politician. He is known as author of the Iglesias law , an anticlerical law regulating ecclesiastical fees and aimed at preventing the impoverishment of the Mexican peasantry.
Liberal politician Melchor Ocampo has raised this issue publicly in 1850, criticizing the Catholic Church for impoverishing Mexican peasants who could not afford the fees. The Diocese of Sulci was an episcopal seat as early as the seventh century. After its decline the bishop of Sulci took up his residence at the village of Tratalias. [3]In 1503, the seat was officially moved to Iglesias but, in 1514, the Diocese was reunited with the Archdiocese of Cagliari.
