The first Uniflite boat an all fiberglass 17' outboard. Uniflite soon added a 14', an 18' and a 20' outboard and inboard/outboard boats, followed by a 25' express cruiser followed by a 31' and a 34' boat. Uniflite was the only boat builder exclusively using fire-retardant resins in the production of pleasure boats. [citation needed]
By 1935, a 15.5' utility boat sold for as little as US$406 ($9,023 in 2023 dollars [4]). During World War II, the company produced small patrol boats and launches for the U.S. Navy. After the war, Chris-Craft introduced a new lineup of civilian pleasure boats in time for the massive American consumer expansion of the 1950s.
Chris-Craft Corporation is at least the fourth iteration of the boat building company. The original company, Chris-Craft Boats, was founded in the late 19th century by Christopher Columbus Smith (1861–1939) in Michigan. It became famous for its mahogany-hulled powerboats from the 1920s through the 1950s.
Chris-Craft ended production of its last mahogany-hulled boat, the Constellation, in 1971. Chris-Craft Industries sold its boat division to Murray Industries in 1981. Chris-Craft Industries retained the Chris-Craft trademark and licensed it to Murray. [8] After Chris-Craft sold its boat division, it focused solely on its broadcast division.
1961 Correct Craft Ski Nautique. This was the first year of regular production. In the early days of water skiing, the preferred boats of skiers were inboards built by Chris-Craft, Century Resorter, and Correct Craft. Among these, the Correct Craft Atom Skier was the most popular. However, these boats produced wakes that were larger than desirable.
Chris-Craft Commander is the name of a range of cruisers built by Chris-Craft Industries. Originally built of wood, the first fiberglass Commander was built in 1963 and debuted at the 1964 New York Boat Show. At the time, none of the large main line motor yacht builders (Matthews, Owens, C.P. Leeks (Pacemaker), etc.) were building in fiberglass.
