Woods Canyon Pueblo, also known as Wood Canyon Ruin, was a Northern San Juan pueblo inhabited during the broad 1000 to 1499 period [Ancient Pueblo People left southwestern Colorado by 1300]. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. [17] Ruins consisting of as many as 200 rooms, 50 kivas, and 16 towers, and possibly a plaza.
The reservation lies in parts of seven counties; in descending order of land area they are: Uintah, Duchesne, Wasatch, Grand, Carbon, Utah, and Emery counties. The total land area is 6,769.173 square miles (17,532.08 km 2) with control of the lands split between Ute Indian Allottees, the Ute Indian Tribe, and the Ute Distribution Corporation.

The park has archaeological evidence of Ancestral Puebloan sites and the Ute culture. The route turns northerly, passing Ute Mountain and Yucca House National Monument, an unexcavated Ancestral Puebloan site. Mesa Verde National Park - Cliff Palace. The route continues along U.S. Routes 160 / 491 to Cortez, the county seat of Montezuma County.
The site, designated 5MT10010, dates to between approximately 1150 and 1175 A.D. It is located on the south slopes of Ute Mountain near Towaoc, approximately 15 miles west of Mesa Verde, the famous Ancestral Pueblo cliff dwellings. Some archeologists believe that the site was settled by immigrants from Chaco Canyon, or the Chuska Mountains. [2]
