Father Dabrowski called that hill Polonia. [5] In 1874 a church school was started at Polonia, staffed by five Felician Sisters who were sent as missionaries from Kraków, Poland. [3] By 1907 the parish had grown to 320 families, the school instructed 200 students, and the parish complex include an orphanage for 46 boys. [4]
The original Sacred Heart-Saint Wenceslaus Church, a small frame building, was constructed shortly after the parish's formal establishment in 1864. It stood on top of the hill, overlooking the location of the current church. On May 10, 1875, a new pastor, the Reverend Adolf Snigurski, began construction of the present church.

Parishioner Joseph Bemish built St. Joseph's Chapel in the church cemetery in 1896. On the cornerstone was written "St. Joseph's Kapelle 1896." St. Joseph chapel was commissioned by Rev. John Metzler (pastor at Sacred Heart church for six years) in memory of their former pastor, Rev. Joseph Boehm, who died on August 23, 1893.
