Vilafranca is a centre for the local wine industry, along with neighbouring Sant Sadurní d'Anoia. Other local industries include textiles, metallurgy, food processing and construction materials. It is also an important commercial centre. Vilafranca is also the birthplace of the Penedesenca fowl, famous for their chocolate-coloured eggs.
La Llacuna (Catalan pronunciation: [lə ʎəˈkunə]) is a municipality of 884 inhabitants (2003), located in the comarca of Anoia, in the province of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It is a tourist town; nearby destinations include Igualada, the Vilafranca del Penedès wine route, and the Monastery of Montserrat.
El Prat was founded between the years 1720 and 1740, when the town started to grow besides a path crossing. The first buildings to appear were the church (dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul), the hostel (which served as a school, bakery, and obviously as a hostel), and some other houses built by the farmers of the delta, who came to the church to pray.
The name literally means "New Town of the Route", the route being the road from Igualada to Vilafranca del Penedès (now the C-244).
