The forewing has before the distal margin a russet-brown band which is broad anteriorly, strongly tapering behind, and bears 2 white-centred black ocelli in its upper portion; towards the hind margin an additional, somewhat smaller, ocellus is visible. The hindwing has 3—4 white-centred ocelli which are edged with brown.
Ocelli are present; the fourth tarsal segment is cylinder-shaped. The four large wings are translucent, smoky grey, or mixed, and the anterior pair is slightly longer than the posterior one. Their aquatic larvae are used as fish bait and are called hellgrammites.
In almost all genera is a pair of ocelli near the base of the head, and in a few, the elytra cover the entire abdomen. The maxillary mala of larvae are strap-shaped, but not as long as in the Proteininae , and the mandible lacks a prostheca .
The presence of ocelli distinguishes the Trichoceridae from these other families. There are approximately 160 known species. The adults can be found flying in the fall and the spring and some are active even in the winter, hence their common name. They form dancing, loose swarms of mostly males.
