Sadako (Japanese: 貞子) aka Sadako KOL (Japanese: 貞子：咒殺 KOL) is a 2019 Japanese supernatural horror film directed by Hideo Nakata.Loosely based on the novel Tide by Koji Suzuki, the film is an installment in the Ring franchise, and a sequel to Nakata's 1999 film Ring 2.
A direct sequel, Sadako 3D 2 was released in 2013. Both were directed by Tsutomu Hanabusa. They are sequels to Rasen/Spiral, ignoring the film Ring 2 thereby creating a branched-off continuity. In 2016, Sadako vs. Kayako, directed by Kōji Shiraishi, was released, a crossover of the Ju-on series of horror films.
The original sequel was Spiral, released in 1998, but due to its poor reception, a new sequel, Ring 2, was released in 1999 which continued the story line of this film. It was followed by a 2000 prequel, Ring 0: Birthday, followed by Sadako in 2019. Spiral in turn was followed by Sadako 3D in 2012 and Sadako 3D 2 in 2013.
A prequel film was released the following year, Ring 0: Birthday (2000), based on the Lemon Heart segment of the Suzuki anthology novel Birthday in the Ring novel series. 13 years after this film’s release, the soft reboot Sadako 3D (2012) was released, loosely based on the Suzuki novel S, from the aforementioned Ring novel series.
