1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 Hardtop Sport Coupe 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle 327 Wagon. The 1968 Chevelle received an all-new sculpted body with tapered front fenders and a rounded beltline. The car adopted a long-hood/short-deck profile with a high rear-quarter "kick-up."
The following year the motor became available in the compact Chevy II also. For the 1970 model year the 396 was bored 0.03 in (0.76 mm), resulting in a 402 cu in (6.6 L) engine. Despite this, the motor was still badged as a 396. 1970 was also the final production year for the L78.
Beaumont SD 396 cars built in 1966 with the 4 speed manual transmission are exceedingly rare; only 41 were ever built. Starting in 1970, GM Canada discontinued the Beaumont in favor of both Chevrolet Chevelle and Pontiac LeMans midsized cars, which were identical to U.S. models.

Many collectors consider the Beaumont SD396 even more desirable than the Chevelle SS 396, since it is far more rare. Many Acadians and Beaumonts succumbed to rough Canadian winters, suffering from rust and mechanical wear and tear, leaving very few original specimens left, in addition to much lower production than equivalent Chevy models.
