The Fourth Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge [a] is a highway bridge over the Mekong River that links the Chiang Khong District, Chiang Rai Province of Thailand and Houayxay in Laos. Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge is the first bridge in the Mekong River. The following is a list of crossings of the Mekong River.The Mekong is a river in Southeast Asia.It is the world's 12th-longest river and the 7th-longest in Asia.
A joint committee was established in 1991 which aimed to resolved the dispute peacefully, however discussions dragged on throughout the decade. The First Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge was opened on 4 April 1994. [4] A joint boundary commission was established in 1997, however its work was suspended in 1998 following the Asian financial crisis. [4]
The Fourth Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge at Ban Houayxay, which opened in December 2013 and replaced ferry service across the river, is now the northernmost road border crossing between the two countries. Asian Highway 3, which runs through Ban Houayxay, extends north to Yunnan Province of China and south to Chiang Rai Province of Thailand.
It runs southwestwards reaching the provincial capital of Ban Houayxay, Bokeo Province, on river Mekong, where it crosses the Fourth Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge. China is interested in improving traffic routes to Southeast Asia, to be financed with together with Thailand. China has the main share in the expansion of highways in Laos.
