Alabama Power is an investor-owned, tax-paying utility, and the second largest subsidiary of Southern Company. More than 84,000 miles (135,000 km) of power lines carry electricity to customers throughout a service territory of 44,500 square miles (115,000 km 2). [3]
PowerSouth was founded as Alabama Electric Cooperative (AEC) in 1941 and changed its name to PowerSouth in 2008. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] The cooperative operates one of very rare salt cavern -based compressed-air energy storage installations.
It works closely with the legislature and other state agencies on matters that affect all co-ops in Alabama. It produces the Alabama Living magazine mailed to all rural electric consumer/members. It also operates a print shop for custom printing required by its member co-ops. There are more than 1 million rural electric consumers in Alabama.
The utility made the announcement Thursday in a news release, ending a project that had drawn protests from area residents and environmental groups.
In January 2016, the United States Department of Energy announced a $80m award fund to develop Generation IV reactor designs. [1] One of two beneficiaries, Southern Company Services will use the funding to develop a Molten Chloride Fast Reactor, a type of MSR developed earlier by British scientists at Atomic Energy Research Establishment.
