The flagtails (āhole [4] or āholehole [5] in the Hawaiian language) are a family (Kuhliidae) of centrarchiform ray-finned fish of the Indo-Pacific area. The family consists of about 12 species in one genus, Kuhlia. Most are euryhaline and often found in brackish water, but the genus also includes species restricted to marine or fresh water.

In the Hawaiian language, āholehole refers to the young stage, [3] and āhole the mature fish. It was sometimes called puaʻa kai, literally "sea pig". [4]
The Hawaiian chub is restricted to the Central Pacific Ocean where it is found in the waters around the Hawaiian Islands and probably the Line Islands.It is found at depths of greater than 1 m (3 ft 3 in) in the vicinity of rocky and coral reefs within the intertidal and subtidal zone.
