Many trim functions have an optional parameter to specify a list of characters to trim, instead of the default whitespace characters. For example, PHP and Python allow this optional parameter, while Pascal and Java do not. With Common Lisp's string-trim function, the parameter (called character-bag) is required.

This template removes the last word of the first parameter, i.e. the last non-space token after the last space. Use |1= for the first parameter if the string may contain an equals sign (=). By default, words are delimited by spaces, but the optional parameter |sep= can set the separator to any character.

This template trims leading and trailing (but not interior) whitespace from a string. The string should be passed as the first unnamed parameter. The parameter must be named |1= if its value contains a = character. You may substitute this template—that is, if this template is used as {}, the resulting wikicode is "clean".
The Template:Str_number/trim extracts a number at the start of parameter 1. It takes a string as parameter, and returns the string trimmed to the beginning number if non-numeric text does not appear before the first number.

Base 1: the first character is numbered 1, and so on. Any leading or trailing whitespace is removed from the string before searching. If the requested position is negative, this function will search the string counting from the last character. In other words, number = -1 is the same as asking for the last character of the string.
