The Rupes Nigra ("Black Rock"), a phantom island, was believed to be a black rock located at the Magnetic North Pole or at the geographic North Pole itself. Described by Gerardus Mercator as 33 French miles in size, it provided a supposed explanation for why all compasses point to this location.
The Shawnee Lookout Archeological District is a historic district in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of Ohio. Inventio Fortunata (also Inventio Fortunate, Inventio Fortunat or Inventio Fortunatae), "Fortunate, or fortune-making, discovery", is a lost book, probably dating from the 14th century, containing a description of the North Pole as a magnetic island (the Rupes Nigra) surrounded by a giant whirlpool and four continents.
The mound today stands 30 feet (9.1 m) in height and is the sole intact feature of the earthworks. The 5-acre site is located on a bluff above the Little Miami River about 5 miles upstream from the Ohio River. While occupied over hundreds of years, it was settled most intensively in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, and is the most excavated Fort Ancient site of this time period. [ 3 ]

Wright and Olaf Prufer of Kent State University performed research by comparing artifacts found at the Welling site with those of other Paleo-Indian sites. They also wrote an article about the Welling site (10,000 to 11,800 BC) for the Ohio Archaeologist. [4] Based on their analysis, the Welling site is an early Paleo-Indian site.
