Buckeye Steel Castings was a Columbus, Ohio steelmaker best known today for its longtime president, Samuel P. Bush, who was the grandfather of President George H. W. Bush and great-grandfather of President George W. Bush. Buckeye, named for the Ohio Buckeye tree, was founded in Columbus as the Murray-Hayden Foundry, which made iron farm implements.
With the increase in power of steam locomotives, the old wood freight cars could not take the strain, and demand for Ralston's all-steel cars exploded.By 1907, expansion of the Rarig facility began with the construction of a 1,400-foot (430 m) long Punch, Shear Fitting and Erection Shop.
The weight fully loaded is 285 tons (259 t). The 6 sets of wheels from front to back are two sets of 33-inch (840 mm) wheels for the pilot truck, 3 sets of 70-inch (1.8 m) wheels for the drivers, and one set of 42-inch (1,100 mm) wheels for the trailing truck. The tender has 2 Buckeye steel built 6 wheel trucks each wheel at 33 inches.
The group also has several service units in the roofing, security gate systems, and steel I-beam markets. While the holding company resides in Columbus, the units operate in many other locations including: Columbus, Wilmington , and Mason, Ohio and Atlanta, Georgia .
