Pacific halibut belong to the family Pleuronectidae. From November to March, mature halibut concentrate annually on spawning grounds along the edge of the continental shelf at depths from 183 to 457 m (600 to 1,500 ft). Halibut are strong swimmers and are able to migrate long distances.
In the Beaufort Sea and eastern Canada, polar cod and Gelatinous Snailfish are important prey items [9] [11] while in the shrimp grounds of west Greenland, shrimp and redfish are the primary prey. [12] They are known to feed on significant quantities of offal discarded from fishing vessels. [10] Greenland halibut spawn from January–March.
The Atlantic Halibut is a batch spawner where females lay anywhere from a few thousand to four million eggs (depending on the size and age of the fish, older females tend to lay only two million in one spawning period [citation needed]). Spawning occurs between December and April near the bottom of the ocean between 5 and 7 °C (41 and 45 °F).
These halibut are broadcast spawners with high fecundity, meaning they produce thousands of offspring in each spawning cycle. [7] Spawning occurs primarily from spring to summer, with males and females gathering in offshore waters to release their eggs and sperm into the open water, allowing fertilization to happen externally.
To identify nursery habitats of pelagic broadcast spawning species, such as halibut, cod, grouper, and others, the first step is to identify the adult spawning grounds. This can be done with targeted fishing surveys and dissection of fish gonads for maturity stage.
