Ashland is a town in Benton County, Mississippi, United States and the county seat. [3] The population was 551 at the 2020 census, down from 569 at the 2010 census. [4] Ashland was incorporated on March 8, 1871, and has a Mayor-Aldermen form of government.
Benton was chartered in 1836, and incorporated in 1846. [4] [5] [6] In 1849, the county seat was moved to Yazoo City, to which a Mr. Benton wrote at the time: With the removal of the county seat, Benton began to decline and each year its population lessens, and the few houses left are dilapidated, dingy, decaying, and tumbling down.
