The line-oriented debugger DEBUG.EXE is an external command in operating systems such as DOS, OS/2 and Windows (only in 16-bit/32-bit versions [1]).. SASM (short for SimpleASM) is a free and open source cross-platform integrated development environment for the NASM, MASM, GAS and FASM assembly languages. It features syntax highlighting and includes a debugger. [1] SASM is intended to allow users to easily develop and run programs written in assembly language.
Some debuggers operate on a single specific language while others can handle multiple languages transparently. For example, if the main target program is written in COBOL but calls assembly language subroutines and PL/1 subroutines, the debugger may have to dynamically switch modes to accommodate the changes in language as they occur.
