The first four Māori electorates were established for special elections in 1868, during the term of the fourth parliament. These four seats remained until the country's change to a mixed-member proportional system in 1996 , when a large number of general electorate seats were changed as well.
At the 1996 election, there were 44 North Island electorates. By the 2023 election, this had increased to 49 electorates. In October 2024, Statistics New Zealand announced that population changes necessitated reducing the number of North Island general electorates by one, bringing the total number of North Island general electorates to 48.
