The route heads initially heads northwest from the unincorporated community of Holden. After crossing the Tickfaw River, LA 1036 curves northward to an intersection with LA 441 between Magnolia and Starns. The highway turns west concurrent with LA 441 for 1.1 miles (1.8 km) then turns north again at Magnolia.
