Ridgewood Ranch sign on display at the Mendocino County Museum Ridgewood Ranch is a large ranch situated 7 miles (11 km) south of Willits, California , in rural Mendocino County . It is probably best known for being the final resting place of the racehorse Seabiscuit .
Seabiscuit (May 23, 1933 – May 17, 1947) was a champion thoroughbred racehorse in the United States who became the top money-winning racehorse up to the 1940s. He beat the 1937 Triple Crown winner, War Admiral, by four lengths in a two-horse special at Pimlico and was voted American Horse of the Year for 1938.
In 1921, long before he bought Seabiscuit, Charles Howard purchased the 16,000-acre (6,475 ha) Ridgewood Ranch at Willits in Mendocino County. His 15-year-old son, Frankie, died there in 1926 after a truck accident on the property (the elder Howard established the Frank R. Howard Memorial Hospital as a memorial to his son). [ 1 ]

Ridgewood Summit is a low mountain pass in Mendocino County, California, traversed by U.S. Route 101 at an altitude of 1,956 feet (596 m). [1] It crosses the Mendocino Range , connecting Ukiah and the watershed of the Russian River , on the south of the pass, to Willits and the watershed of the Eel River on the north.
The second statue initially resided with Seabiscuit at Ridgewood Ranch until Charles Howard's death in 1950 led the surviving family to sell the property. It was then relocated to Binglin Stables in Moorpark Ranch, California, owned by musician Bing Crosby and Lindsay Howard, Charles Howard's son. [39]
