The institute was founded in 1970, under the congressional charter of the National Academy of Sciences as the Institute of Medicine. [2]On April 28, 2015, NAS membership voted in favor of reconstituting the membership of the IOM as a new National Academy of Medicine and establishing a new division on health and medicine within the NRC that has the program activities of the IOM at its core.
[4] [5] In 2001 the institute's funding was withdrawn and it closed; [6] in 2002 it was acquired by The Institute for Medical Research at North Shore-LIJ. [7] In 2005 board member Leonard Feinstein, co-founder of Bed Bath & Beyond , made a $25 million gift that led to its renaming The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research . [ 7 ]
Betty Diamond received her B.A. in Art History (Magna Cum) from Radcliffe College in 1969 and her M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1973. In 1976 she began her residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, New York, NY and in 1979 embarked on post-doctoral fellowship in Immunology with Dr. Matthew Scharff at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY.

Hay-Smith then joined the faculty of the University of Otago in Wellington, rising to associate professor in 2014 and full professor in 2020. [4] [5] [6] Hay-Smith is an honorary associate professor at the University of Stirling. She is part of the Flourishing Together research project on health policy for disabled people. [7] [8]
