Gulfport, Mississippi (map center) is east of Long Beach, west of Biloxi, along the Gulf of Mexico. According to the United States Census Bureau , the city had a total area of 64.2 sq mi (166.4 km 2 ), of which 56.9 sq mi (147.4 km 2 ) is land and 7.3 sq mi (19.0 km 2 ) (11.40%) is water.
The principal cities are Gulfport and Biloxi. The 2010 census placed the Gulfport-Biloxi MSA population at 388,488, though as of 2019, it was estimated to have increased to 417,665. [2] The area was significantly impacted by Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005, and prior to the hurricane, had experienced steady to moderate population growth.
Although the Turkey Creek Community predated the founding of the City of Gulfport, it was annexed by that City in 1994. [2] After Hurricane Katrina devastated the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 2005, business expansion accelerated northward, away from the coastline, and into the Turkey Creek Community, garnering national attention. MS 605 first appeared in maps in 2004, [2] [3] and has not changed significantly since. Prior to its designation in 2004, the portion of MS 605 between I-10 and US 90 was known as Mississippi Highway 975 ( MS 975 ), with the remaining portion north of I-10 known as Mississippi Highway 981 ( MS 981 ).
