Illinois Route 83 (IL 83) is a 91.73-mile-long (147.63 km) major north–south state highway in northeast Illinois. It stretches from U.S. Route 30 (US 30, Lincoln Highway ) by Lynwood and Dyer, Indiana , north to the Wisconsin border by Antioch at Wisconsin Highway 83 (WIS 83).
The highway passes a "Home of Superman" sign as it enters Metropolis, Illinois. The route crosses the Ohio River over the Brookport Bridge, and then curves to the west to travel through downtown Metropolis. It continues northwest to Vienna, after which it turns to the northeast. It is a limited-access highway except for five signalized intersections near downtown Chicago. Just short of the northern terminus of Lake Shore Drive, US 41 exits at Foster Avenue. It follows Foster Avenue west for over two miles (3.2 km) and then heads northwest on Lincoln Avenue into neighboring Lincolnwood.
