The Lempa River (Spanish: Río Lempa) is a 422-kilometre-long (262 mi) river in Central America. [2] It is a transboundary river shared by El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. [ 3 ]
The Lempa River watershed dominates El Salvador covering half of the country at 10, 255 km 2 and draining 6, 214 million m 3. The Lempa is 422 km long and originates in the Sierra Madre and the Sierra del Merendón in southern Guatemala. The river flows in Honduras for 31 km before entering El Salvador in northwest.
It was the last bridge spanning the Lempa River after the FMLN bombed the Golden Bridge on 15 October 1981. [1] [3] On 3 January 1984, the Ministry of Public Works announced that it would build a temporary ford across the Lempa River to reestablish a river crossing. [5] The ford was built 500 feet (150 m) downstream of the destroyed bridge. [3]
In the early stages of the Trifinio Plan's development the commission studied three international river basins. In 1987 they developed a new plan involving the Lempa River Basin, the Ulúa River, and the Motagua River. The Motagua and Ulúa rivers were eventually dropped, leaving the Lempa River as the Trifinio Plan's primary focus. [17]
The Cerrón Grande Hydroelectric Dam (Spanish: Central Hidroeléctrica Cerrón Grande) spans the Lempa River 78 km (48 mi) north of San Salvador in the municipalities of Potonico, (Chalatenango) and Jutiapa in El Salvador. The concrete gravity dam has a height of 90 m (300 ft) and a length of 800 m (2,600 ft).

A Spanish force commanded by Luis de Moscoso Alvarado, consisting of about 120 Spanish cavalry, accompanied by infantry and Indian auxiliaries, crossed the Lempa River and founded San Miguel on 21 November 1530. [77] In addition to the Spanish colonists, the settlement included Mexica and Tlaxcalan allies, among other Indian auxiliaries. [78]
