This list of awards for contributions to society is an index to articles on notable awards for contributions to society. It excludes humanitarian and service awards, religion-related awards, peace prizes, law enforcement awards and honors and legal awards, which are covered by separate lists.
Vital articles are lists of subjects for which the English Wikipedia should have corresponding featured-class articles. They serve as centralized watchlists to track the quality status of Wikipedia's most important articles and to give editors guidance on which articles to prioritize for improvement.
The U.S. Department of Commerce honor awards program was established in 1949 under the presidency of Harry Truman, with the Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals created that year, and the President's "E" Award, and Ron Brown Excellence in Innovation Award created in later years.
Featured content represents the best of Wikipedia, including articles, pictures, and other contributions that showcase excellent results of the collaborative efforts of Wikipedia. All featured content undergoes a thorough review process to ensure that it meets the highest standards in order to serve as the best example of Wikipedia's end goals.
Every year, editors review some 2,400 good articles and featured articles. Quality varies among those reviews but some are exceptional for their handling of difficult subject matter, breadth in a broad topic, or general review effort. Some are just great examples of getting the job done without needless length.
For example, Science 1 is a Vital-1 article, while Scientific method 3 is a lower level of vitality. Determining which articles are vital at lower levels often involves looking at the articles at higher levels. For example, since History 2 is of high vitality, World War II 3 is also a vital article, just at a lower level.
Each entry on this list should be an article on its own (not merely a section in a less unusual article) and of decent quality, and in large meeting Wikipedia's manual of style.
