Avenue Road is the western limit of the former village of Yorkville, officially beginning at Bloor Street and ending just north of Highway 401.At its southern terminus, it runs between two tall buildings – the Park Hyatt hotel (on the northwest corner of Bloor and Avenue Road) and the Renaissance Plaza condominium complex.
York Street is one of the oldest streets in Toronto. It extends from Toronto Harbour north to Queen Street one block west of Bay Street. At Front Street, University Avenue merges into York Street south of Front. To the east at Front Street is Union Station and the Royal York Hotel. At its northern end is Osgoode Hall and the Sheraton Centre hotel.

The name of the street is derived from Kingston, Ontario as the road was the primary route used to travel from Toronto to the settlements east of it situated along the shores of Lake Ontario; in the west end of Kingston, the road was referred to as the York Road (referring to Toronto) until at least 1908, and is today named Princess Street.
