The "C-style Nib" is the chisel-point nib that creates thick and thin lines depending on the angle the pen is held. The C-style nibs are a favorite of many calligraphers. The "D-style", an oval shaped head nib, created an italic/gothic style to the letters that it produced. All of these nibs had Ross' signature brass reservoir.
An even more flexible contemporary pen is the Pilot Custom 742 and 743 with Falcon nib. These pens are much more flexible than a Pilot Falcon (aka Namiki Falcon). [5] A very few number of "nibmeisters" (or nib modifiers) can both add flex and grind down the tips of modern 14K nibs to more closely match earlier examples of fountain pen flex nibs.

The nib is a spring-loaded collar that, when depressed as the lead is worn away, extends out again when pressure is released. An advanced ratchet type has a mechanism that rotates the pencil lead 9 degrees counter-clockwise every time the lead is pressed on to the paper (which counts as one stroke), to distribute wear evenly.
The earliest known split-nib metal dip pen is a surviving copper-alloy pen found in Roman Britain (AD 43 to 410). [4] Several other surviving all-metal and removable-nib pens from the Middle Ages and Renaissance have been found, suggesting they were used alongside quill pens. [5] [6] [7] [8]
The Waterman Pen Company is a major manufacturing company of luxury fountain pens and inks, based in Paris, France. The firm was established in 1884 in New York City by Lewis Waterman , [ 1 ] being one of the few remaining first-generation fountain pen companies, as "Waterman S.A."
In 1828 Josiah Mason developed a cheap, efficient slip-in nib based on existing models, which could be added to a pen holder. [3] By the 1850s, Birmingham was the world center of steel nib manufacture; more than half the steel nibs manufactured in the world were made there. [3] Thousands of skilled craftsmen and women were employed in the industry.
