The mayor of London is the chief executive of the Greater London Authority. The role was created in 2000 after the Greater London devolution referendum in 1998, and was the first directly elected mayor in the United Kingdom. [2] The current mayor is Sadiq Khan, who took office on 9 May 2016.
He was re-elected as Mayor in both 2021 and 2024, being the first London mayor to win a third term. [2] He was included in the 2018 Time 100 list of most influential people in the world. [3] Khan's policies as Mayor have resulted in making London's transport more accessible and reducing the number of polluting vehicles in central London.
The 2024 London mayoral election was held on 2 May 2024 to elect the next mayor of London. It took place simultaneously with elections to the London Assembly , some local council by-elections in London and regular local elections elsewhere in England and Wales .
