For the next person googling this, as of Nov 2022, DEFEATING Psychic Pokemon is best on the Kanto routes (Drowsee), and CAPTURING Psychic Pokemon can be done with egg hatching. Eggs don't count towards defeating.
The Psychic and Ghost type is pretty much a double edged sword. Moongeist Beam and a Psychic STAB hit pretty much everything with Moonblast tagging along to hit Dark types. Alternatively, it's 4x weakness to dark and ghost is a big issue, making Yveltal a big issue, as well as easy picking for Marshadow to revenge kill with Shadow Sneak.

Psychic is probably the most gradual fall from grace a type has had. Unlike how the nerfs kind of killed Ice in gen 2, or how Normal basically jumped off a cliff in gen 4, Psychic somewhat retained in viability throughout generation 2 and 3, with many psychic types occupying important spots in several tiers.
It's kinda tricky: Psychic is weak against ghost. You got that right. But it's strong against poison type. In the first generation dual typing didn't exist, so Hunter was a pure ghost Pokemon. Starting from generation 2, Gastly, Hunter and Gengar gained a second type: poison. That means that they also became weak to psychic.
Well yeah, this is when I want a strong offensive psychic Pokemon on my team. When I'm just messing around and trying different teams, I like to choose Xatu, Grumpig, Claydol, Bronzong, Swoobat or Gothitelle.
Gothitelle is an interesting case. Its, by tiers, one of the worst Psychic types to have graced this planet, but, it also has a trait which is so broken that its banned from Ubers. Shadow Tag is an incredible ability, to the point of being broken. However, the ability is banned, and not the Pokemon, so I can't really give Gothitelle the full ...
