Re: Knife Blade Shapes. Ahhh! The eyes look to be carved similar to a flower. Draw a circle for the pupil and then make a stop cut straight up and down around the outside of that circle. Use a knife with a long blade or a gouge to cut around and down to that center circle, stopping at the outline you cut.

A Helvie rough out knife is sharper than any of the knives on the list you have and would work fine for spoons, but a hook knife makes the bowls a lot easier.
Flexcuts are good too. I made chip carving knives using utility knife blades. The blades are thin, flexible, and they're cheap and easy to make for what you want. I also have a Flexcut skew knife blade I rehandled. And then there's the knife I made from a reciprocating saw blade. 210905_0001.jpg.

If it is 1mm thick at the spine and 25mm wide, a "flat bevel" would be less than four degrees and would not hold up to the stresses of carving. As stated above the bevel angle should be 10 to 12 degrees. Last edited by pallin; 08-15-2019, 10:31 AM .

Also I was using a utility knife while waiting for my 3 flex-cut knives. I used the small flex-cut knife which is sharp but the utility knife is even sharper, very thin blade, and has a fine
Re: Blade Covers ?? For straight knives, I like to use the magnetic sheets or cards that businesses use for advertising. Just trace the knife blade twice onto the material leaving about 1/8 inch border, cut out the shapes and wrap with duct tape to keep them together. Stays on the knife real well thanks to the magnet.
The 1-3/4 inch blade is .05 where it enters the handle. It maintains that thickness for half the length then tapers to quite thin at the tip. When considering the strength of the blade, remember that the forces of cutting are generally in line, i.e. the blade should not be used for prying chips loose. 👍 1.
Gouges normally get sharpened and honed at 20 degrees. Hone every 20 - 30 minutes of work. HOW TO Draw an angle of 12 degrees on a piece of card. Each side of the knife gets 1/2 of that. Lay the knife on the 1500 grit W&D paper or a 1000 grit water stone -= gentle pull strokes like the angle Do 5X.
The usefulness of the upswept blade in your carving may only be answered by trying it. Many whittlers find it helps them to learn to use slicing cuts. My personal favorite is a double-sided blade, curved on one side and rather straight on the other. joepaulbutler. Senior Member. Join Date: Jan 2009.
