The CAI, headers, and CAT-Back helps with air flow, while the under drive pulley and electrical fan help to reduce the drag from belt driven engine components. As with increase MPG, collectively, these mod work to produce the best HP gains in a non-aspired engine vs. using only one stand alone mod. Hope this helps.

These miles were all local with some highway. Easy driving with the gas pedal as well. The TRD exhaust and Volant CAI I put on had no effect on mpg.
Exhaust allows the spent gases escape faster, people who get exhausts just for the sound are dumb, if you want gains in power and MPG get something as straight through as possible. When the spent air fuel leaves the cylinder it is very hot, helping this leave the engine faster also helps.

We all got our Tundra's knowing that we had some of the worst gas mileage of all 1/2 tons. But today I sat here wondering what the differences are between our truck and others that today are getting 18-24+ mpg. Most 1/2 tons today have very similar specs as far as their capabilities. Tow around 10k, 4x4, tow/haul gearing options, off road ...
Like I said, smaller engines are proven to get not any better gas mileage on a heavier vehicle like the tundra. It works to hard to make up for its small size and thus decreases gas mileage. I had a 2wd S-10 pickup in 1996 with a nice motor, a 4.3L V6, and that only got 22 mpg hwy and about 19 city, but it sure hauled ass.
I also have the '08 double cab with the 4.7. The worse mileage I got on a tank of gas was 15 MPG and the best so far was 18.25 mpg with 10% ethanol crap gas. I use cruise control as much as possible and see that increases mileage a fair amount by using the minimal amount of throttle.

With that in mind, I am now passing the 2,000 mile mark with my truck and could not be happier with the MPG (and everything else about it). So here are the details: Daily commute - 18.2 MPG combined - 40 miles round trip 1/3 city driving 2/3 interstate; 70 mph on the interstate; city driving is tedious stop and go as I have to work through 20 ...
You need lower gears to compensate for the longer rolling circumference of the taller tire. You will need something in the range of 4:56 or 4:88 gears to get the engine rpm back up to where it needs to be. Too, low of an rpm and the engine is lugging and sucking up more fuel to move the load. Dirty "OLE" Man.
