Elf was an American rock band founded in 1967 by singer and bassist Ronnie James Dio, [2] keyboardist Doug Thaler, [3] drummer Gary Driscoll, [2] and guitarists Nick Pantas [3] and David Feinstein [2] (Dio's cousin). [3] The band was originally called the Electric Elves, [2] but was shortened to the Elves in 1968 and finally Elf in 1972. [3]
Ronnie James "Dio" Padavona was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to Italian-American parents [4] Patrick and Anna from Cortland, New York.His family moved to Portsmouth from Cortland as part of his father's service in the U.S. Army during World War II, [14] and they resided there for only a short time before returning to Cortland.

The Elf Albums (Connoisseur VSOP CD 167) is a CD compilation released in 1994. It consists of Elf 's second and third albums, Carolina County Ball (titled LA 59 in the US) and Trying to Burn the Sun , in their entirety on a single CD.
Elf is the first studio album by Ronnie James Dio's blues rock band called Elf. Produced by Ian Paice and Roger Glover of Deep Purple , the record was released in 1972. On this album, Dio is credited by his birth name, Ronald Padavona.
Around the release of the band's debut Holy Diver in May 1983, Claude Schnell joined as Dio's first full-time keyboardist. [4] After two more studio albums – The Last in Line and Sacred Heart – as well as live release Intermission, Campbell left the band in March 1986. [5] He was replaced by former Giuffria guitarist Craig Goldy. [6]
The band produced two albums before Driscoll's murder in 1987. Gruber had also been working on an Elf reunion, even though such a prospect seemed unlikely given the deaths of Driscoll and frontman Ronnie James Dio; both of whom had been members of the band from foundation until dissolution.
