Several wilderness areas have been set aside within the Los Padres National Forest, including the San Rafael Wilderness, the first primitive area to be included in the U.S. wilderness system after the passage of the Wilderness Act in 1964. Albert Park is a baseball field that is now home to the San Rafael Pacifics. The Pacifics are a member of the Pecos League, an independent professional baseball league not affiliated with Major League Baseball. The park opened March 18, 1951, on land donated by businessman and local entrepreneur Jacob Albert, in 1937.
Originally it was the San Rafael Primitive Area. Due to a disagreement between the Forest Service, US Congress and conservationists over 2,200 acres (8.9 km 2 ) of natural grass openings called portreros , which contained pictographs from the Chumash Indians, it took a long time for the wilderness designation.
