Honningsvåg was declared a city in 1996 by the municipal council of Nordkapp. National legislation was passed in 1997 that states that a Norwegian city must have at least 5,000 inhabitants, but since Honningsvåg was declared a city in 1996, it was exempt from this legislation. This makes it one of the smallest cities in Norway.
Honningsvåg Airport, Valan (Norwegian: Honningsvåg lufthavn, Valan; IATA: HVG, ICAO: ENHV) is a regional airport serving Honningsvåg in Nordkapp Municipality, Norway.The airport is located at Valan, on the south side of Skipsfjorden, 4 kilometers (2 + 1 ⁄ 2 miles) north of the town, and 31 km (19 + 1 ⁄ 2 mi) from the North Cape.
The 4,443-metre (14,577 ft) long tunnel opened in 1999, at the same time as the North Cape Tunnel, as part of a large project to connect the mainland of Norway to North Cape. This tunnel goes through a large mountain called "Honningsvågfjellet" west of the town of Honningsvåg. The 9-metre (30 ft) wide tunnel has 2 lanes (one in each direction).
The tunnels were built to connect the mainland of Norway with the town of Honningsvåg and the tourist attraction at the North Cape. The tunnel was officially opened on 15 June 1999 by King Harald V of Norway. The tunnel is 6.875 kilometres (4.272 mi) long and reaches a depth of 212 metres (696 ft) below sea level. [1]
