The Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61, was written by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1806. Its first performance by Franz Clement was unsuccessful and for some decades the work languished in obscurity, until revived in 1844 by the then 12-year-old violinist Joseph Joachim with the orchestra of the London Philharmonic Society conducted by Felix Mendelssohn.
It was written about 1801, after the second Romance, and was published 1803, two years before the publication of the second. Thus, this romance was designated as Beethoven's first. [1] The Romance, Op. 40, is scored for violin solo and an orchestra of strings, two oboes, two bassoons, two horns and flute. The duration is about 8 minutes. [1]
The Violin Sonata in A major, Hess 46, is a fragmentary and possibly unfinished work for piano and violin composed by Ludwig van Beethoven sometime between 1790 and 1792. Discovered by musicologist Willy Hess, it may be one of Beethoven's first attempts at composing a work for this combination of instruments. [1]
The work's opening movement is the first of Beethoven's sonata first movements that does not repeat the exposition. [1] The development section contains a theme not found in the exposition (this happens in earlier compositions such as the fourth violin sonata also). [2] The work takes approximately 26 minutes to perform.
