Cooley was born August 22, 1920, in Houston, [1] [2] and graduated in 1941 from the University of Texas at Austin (UT), where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and the Texas Cowboys, played on the basketball team, and majored in zoology.
In 1965, Dr. Denton A. Cooley and Dr. Grady L. Hallman, both of the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, Texas, started a band made up of doctors.
