The 1,063-acre (4 km 2) site has a firing range, an administration building, barracks, and a 5,000-metre (16,000 ft) length mountain endurance training course. The United States Navy has operated on the 1,300 acres (5 km 2) plus acres since the early 1960s, and is seeking to set aside an additional 4,486 acres (18.15 km 2) of federal Bureau of Land Management property for the facility.
The structure was rebuilt and is still in use, having been renamed Heritage Hall. It also houses the Argonaut Hall of Fame and Museum, chronicling the school's long history, as well as a memorial to Michael Monsoor, a United States Navy SEAL killed in Iraq and posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, and an alumnus of Garden Grove High School.
Seven service members have received the Medal of Honor for actions in Iraq; five from the Army, one from the Marine Corps and one from the Navy. Paul Ray Smith was the first to receive it for his actions on April 4, 2003, when he held enemy forces back, allowing other wounded soldiers to be evacuated to safety.
