Cobscook Bay State Park is a public recreation area occupying 888 acres (359 ha) on the western shore of Cobscook Bay in Washington County, Maine.The park offers a view of dramatically changing tides that on average can rise to 24 feet (7.3 m) high with some reaching as high as 28 feet (8.5 m).
The park was developed as a dairy farm by the Carver family in 1859. At one point, the 186-acre property had a house, barn, two silos, and sixty head of cattle. After most of the buildings burned down in 1927, the descendants of Captain George A. Carver offered the land to the State of Maine as a park in 1952. [4] [5] It opened in 1963. [6]
The park was formed in 1938 as the first of Maine's state parks three years after the creation of the Maine State Park Commission. It was formed through the donation of 100 acres (40 ha) of land by business persons from the Presque Isle Merchants Association.
Lily Bay State Park is a public recreation area in the town of Greenville, Piscataquis County, Maine. The state park occupies 924 acres (374 ha) on the southeast shore of Moosehead Lake, the largest lake in New England. It was established in 1961 on woodland primarily donated by the Scott Paper Company in 1959. [3]
Holbrook Island Sanctuary is a publicly owned nature preserve with recreational features occupying 1,345 acres (544 ha) on Penobscot Bay in the town of Brooksville, Hancock County, Maine. The site includes upland forest and meadows, wetland marshes and ponds, and rocky mainland shores in addition to off-shore Holbrook Island.
The park was created in the 1940s as one of Maine's original five state parks after the land was acquired from the Federal government in 1939. [2] The park's borders were extended across Maine Route 9 with the addition of the Knight Woods parcels in the 1990s and 2000s. [4]
Rangeley Lake State Park is a public recreation area occupying 870 acres (350 ha) on the southern shore of Rangeley Lake in Franklin County, Maine. The state park is located partly in the town of Rangeley and partly in Rangeley Plantation. [3] It is managed by the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. [4]
