For a mage strategy, i would say use the nimbus rod (very good against destroyer), crystal storm, a sword nights edge at least. for potions use magic power, mana regen, normal regen, and ironskin. for arena just make a few platforms of wood platforms about screen width or more. hope this helps at all to you or anyone who reads it!

In my experience, magic tends to be the easiest path of the three. One of the biggest things about it is the huge variety though. With just three magic weapons, you're only scratching the surface of what's possible. If you want raw power with magic, you'll want the frost staff.

I have been playing Terraria on the PS3 for a while now, and I still don't know how to get a magic weapon. I have a magic mirror that sends you back to your home at any time, but thats it . Help? I want to know how to get a magic weapon. Not one that takes a really long time to get, more like a good starting magic weapon.
As for weapons to support your summons with, I'd go with ranged weapons, personally. But with the Celestial Shell and Stone and a Yo-yo Bag you can do some serious damage with the Terrarian which has plenty enough range in its own right. Phantasm is still plenty strong enough with the Shell/Stone/Quiver as well.
Magic is the second hardest because of the nature of weapons and the use of mana. To use magic weapons properly, you need accessories that reduce mana usage and you need mana potions to keep up high damage output. You also need to get the magic weapons that are good to use and you'll need 2-3 different weapons that do different things.
imo: hallowed 'melee' armor is always the best choice switching from melee to ranged should mean switching weapons and emblems switching from melee to magic should mean switching weapons, emblems, and one extra accessory (mana flower). cross necklace is a must!
