The shaguma (赤熊, "red bear") was a type of headgear worn by the officers of the Imperial Japanese Army troops in the Boshin War (1868–69). The headgear was quite peculiar, being a sort of wig composed of long, dyed yak hair and held in place by a chin-strap.
Boshin (戊辰) is the designation for the fifth year of a sexagenary cycle in traditional East Asian calendars. [3] Although the war lasted for over a year, Boshin refers to the year that the war started in. The characters 戊辰 can also be read as tsuchinoe-tatsu in Japanese, literally "Elder Brother of Earth-Dragon". [3]
The Bavarian Model 1842 (also referred to as the Bavarian M-1842 Rifled Musket) was a 19th-century Bavarian musket originally designed for the Bavarian Army. [1] The musket was exported for foreign service, and saw limited use during the American Civil War [2] and the Boshin War.

University Preparatory Academy (UPA) is a charter school located in San Jose, California, United States. Its charter was approved by the Santa Clara Board of Trustees. UPA opened in the fall of 2007 as a middle and high school, offering grades 7–12th. As of 2020, approximately 650 students attend UPA with a 21:1 student-teacher ratio.
In 1936, the academy moved to Carlsbad, California and opened as the Davis Military Academy, but a year later was again renamed the San Diego Army and Navy Academy. In 1944, "San Diego" was dropped from the name. Army and Navy Academy was notably led by William Currier Atkinson, who served as the academy's president for fifty years. [3]
