A 1st gen iPad Mini cannot be upgraded beyond iOS 9.3.5/9.3.6. A 1st gen iPad Mini is an OVER 7-1/2-year old device, now! These older iPad models are too old, now, underpowered and completely incompatible with any of the current and future versions of iOS/iPadOS. It is what it is, today, in the year 2020!
Old iPads Hi guys, I’ve got a first or second gen iPad mini which was my sons. It’s in fantastic condition but being so old now doesn’t update and has pretty much become obsolete. It’s in fantastic condition but being so old now doesn’t update and has pretty much become obsolete.

The iPad Mini 1 is from 2012 and is, permanently, stuck on iOS 9.3.5/9.3.6. That is a 10-year old iPad that ended ALL its support by 2018. There are, almost, no more third party apps available for very old iPad models, now.
I bought the iPad mini 1st generation during its first released way back 2012. It is so precious to me back then. But now, it's a paperweight. Yes, I can still use it with some old apps (that are still supporting the last ios for ipad mini 1) but I'm disappointed at how slow it is now.
Ipad mini 1 gen I still have an old ipad mini 1 gen and is working perfectly. The problem is that all the apps are not compatible for this device. This is a bad atitude from apple. we should have access to those older versions even if we had to pay a symbolic price.
The first generation iPad Air, iPad mini2 and mini3 can only be updated to iOS 12.5.5. Apple ended major update support for these models of iPad in September 2019 - although they since continue to receive occasional “point” security updates - the most recent being released late last year.
