Center Township is one of eleven townships in Benton County, Indiana. [3] As of the 2020 census, its population was 2,715 and it contained 1,212 housing units. [ 4 ] It was organized in June 1875 and was originally known as Prairie Township.

Benton was platted in 1832. [3] It was named in honor of politician Thomas Hart Benton. [4] The railroad was built through Benton in 1892. [5] A post office was established at Benton in 1835, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1963. [6]
