Part of the second wave of a housing boom in West Philadelphia that started with the completion of the Market Street Elevated line in 1907, this building was also one of the first large apartment buildings ever built in Philadelphia.
Lorraine Apartments was one of the most luxurious and best preserved late 19th-century apartment houses in Philadelphia. In 1900 the building became the Lorraine Hotel when the Italian-owned Metropolitan Hotel Company purchased the apartments.
