Joseph Casavant (French pronunciation: [ʒozɛf kazavɑ̃]; 1807 – 1874) was a French Canadian manufacturer of pipe organs. [ 1 ] Casavant was born 23 January 1807 in Saint-Hyacinthe , Lower Canada to Dominique Casavant and Marie-Desanges Coderre.
Brothers Joseph-Claver (1855–1933) and Samuel-Marie (1859–1929) got their start in organ building in the shop of their father, Joseph Casavant, under his successor Eusèbe Brodeur. Claver worked with Brodeur during 1874–1878, then went to France for a 14-month apprenticeship with the firm of John Abbey in Versailles. [3]
Joseph Casavant built an 18-stop instrument (1,063 pipes) and placed it in a case that was later sculpted by Flavien Rochon in 1871. The instrument was restored by organ builder Louis Mitchell a few years later. Casavant's sons completely reconstructed the organ in 1892. At that time, it was a 52-stop instrument with over 3 manuals and pedal.

interior, notice the 1912 Casavant pipe organ. St. Anthony of Padua church is home to a large 4 manual pipe organ built in 1912 by Casavant Frères of Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, as their Opus 489. The organ enjoys an especially favorable placement in the church being installed in the unusual second balcony some 70 feet above the floor.
